ABOUT
Jonathan Whiting studied under Dr Edward Nesbit at King’s College London where he graduated with a first-class degree in Music and subsequently a master's in Music (MPhil) at the University of Cambridge (St John’s College), where he studied under Professor Richard Causton. Other than composition, Jonathan’s academic studies focused on the works of Stephen Sondheim.
Jonathan primarily writes music for the theatre; he worked with the Cambridge Footlights to compose and orchestrate two of their annual pantomimes (Sleeping Beauty 2020 and Rapenzel 2022), commissioned to compose the incidental music for productions of Saint Joan and the Merchant of Venice at the Cambridge Union and As You Like it at the Fitzwilliam Museum and, most recently, music for the monologue show, ‘Someone Else’s Shoes’ at the Camden Fringe (2022). Jonathan has also been commissioned to score the short film, ‘Graphic’ directed by Hannah Collins and has found particular acclaim in composing songs with his ‘The Porter’ winning a prize from the AOFESS and the song cycle, ‘Seasons’ written for countertenor, Richard Decker who performed the work at Wigmore Hall as part of the 2024 Kathleen Ferrier Awards Semi-Final. Jonathan is also proudly the composer-in-residence of Green Opera, an opera company that champions the work of modern British Composers in an environmentally sustainable way.
He also works closely with author, composer and educationalist, Paul Harris, particularly in editing and typesetting for Queen’s Temple Publications and Faber Music as well as filming and editing publicity material. Additionally, Jonathan assists in the running of the International Malcolm Arnold Festival for which he has arranged both Arnold’s Irish and Welsh Dances.
Jonathan is currently working on an opera.
